Red Deer - Breeding
Red Deer breed in October. Mature stags become aggressive and intolerant of each other in September. The roars of Red deer are heard in the last week of September. Stags tend to gather hinds to herd together for their harem. Stags mate with the fittest hinds that come into heat by the second and third week in October. The harem consists of about five hinds.

Both males and females become sexually mature at sixteen months. Gestation period lasts 8-9 months. A female gives birth to a single calf. Twins are rare. A cow and her calves will live alone for several weeks right after birth. When a calf reaches the age of 16 days, it is able to join the herd.
At a few weeks of age calves begin to eat a little vegetation. Suckling provides the principal nourishment throughout the entire summer period. Calves tend to remain with their mothers during the rut in their first fall.
Red Deer - Behavior
Red deer are active both day and night. The activity peaks begin to fall at dawn and dusk. These are very social animals. They live in summer herds consisting of about 400 individuals. The herds are matriarchical, and are normally dominated by a single cow. Red
deer form seasonal pairs during the rut time. Red deer males turn territorial and aggressive toward other representatives of the species only during the mating season.
