Red Deer - Origins
Red deer are claimed to have existed since the end of the last Ice Age. The earliest cave paintings in Europe are the scenes of a Stone Age man hunting the deer. Many populations of the Red deer have
become extinct due to deforestation, hunting and the Great Famine of 1845 - 1847.

Red Deer - Origins - Predators:
Red Deer's major natural enemies are mountain lions, bears, coyotes, wolves, and cougars. Their main defense methods are running away and hiding. If they have to fight with their predator, they use their hooves, antlers, and teeth.
Red Deer - Conservation Status
Red deer do not have a special conservation status. However, their habitat modification and hunting have influenced their populations greatly. Some populations of the Red deer were greatly reduced in the 19th century. Nowadays, Red deer is a subject to sport hunting. Red deer have increased in number recently.
Red deer are ecologically important. They influence vegetation composition and structure. They serve as an important food source for other animals. The density of Red deer populations can be such that regeneration of native woodland is being prevented.
