Once these animals inhabited the whole Northern hemisphere, but up to today their population declined. The preferred habitats for this species are grasslands, but they are also found in forests, moorlands and mountains. Availability of food determines the choice of the habitat.

This species has reddish-brown coat, which turns grayish in winter. The back and sides of the body are lighter than the rest of the coat. Adult males have a dense dark mane that hangs from the neck to the chest. The red deer photo can be found on most farm sites if located within their range of habitat.
